Young Explorers Interpretive Program

Behind Enemy Lines:     Evasion, Escape & Espionage

Kids Summer Program, all ages

July 10, 2026, 10:30 – 12:00

How did secret operatives navigate behind enemy lines? What tools did pilots have to find their way home? This program takes your young explorers for a hands-on tour of the Vancouver Island Military Museum. On their visit, they will have the unique opportunity to interact with museum objects, learn about Canadians in the Second World War, and even make their own secret map!

This program is geared towards ages 7-11, but older kids are welcome. Children younger than 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

YOUTH IMPACT PROGRAM (YIP)

VIMM’s Youth Impact Program provides Volunteer opportunities for students from Nanaimo’s local Secondary School Districts, to meet their Grade 12 graduation requirements. This program promotes self-confidence, teaches essential life skills, offers employable working experience, and fosters an appreciation for Nanaimo’s heritage.

Volunteers are essential to the fabric of VIMM, and to the wider public by strengthening the museum’s community connection.

Currently, VIMM’s Volunteer opportunities are in Visitor Services. In Fall 2026, we will be expanding our Volunteer opportunities into additional museum spaces such as historical research, collections management, and curatorial mentorship.
